Around 1960, the Shanghai Camera Factory developed the special Model 1501, derived from the Seagull 4B 120 twin-lens reflex but substantially redesigned for covert use. A spring-powered mechanical motor advances a full roll (12 exposures) without manual winding, and the matte black finish minimises reflections. These modifications, combined with the quiet leaf shutter typical of the base platform, made the camera ideal for discreet installation inside a vehicle for surveillance and espionage. Camera No. 444, mechanically in full working order; the taking lens has been removed. A comparable example, No. 029, is illustrated on page 318 of Chinese Camera Collection & Appreciation and noted as part of a special government project. Production figures for the Model 1501 remain undocumented.
