The Leica M Summaron 35mm f/2.8 with goggles is one of those classic Leica lenses that has become collectible not because it is rare, but because it solves a very specific historical problem beautifully.
The “goggles” are the distinctive optical attachment mounted in front of the rangefinder and viewfinder windows. They are not decorative—they were designed mainly for the Leica M3.
Why? The M3 finder originally only showed 50/90/135mm framelines, so Leica created goggled 35mm lenses to let M3 owners compose and focus accurately at 35mm. The goggles alter both the viewfinder magnification and the rangefinder coupling
